Our oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface and shares close relationships with our rivers and freshwater reserves.Covering about 70% of the earth’s surface, our seas supply half the oxygen we breathe, and provide food and livelihoods for more than a billion people.
They are also home to over 260,000 species of wondrous creatures and scientists believe there are more than a million species in the seas. However, unscientific human exploitation is driving many creatures to extinction before we have had a chance to even learn about them.
Our seas and riverine systems not only support life on earth- they guide our commerce and economy as well as security and maritime prospects.Yet, we know more about outer space than our own oceans; we have better maps of Mars and Venus than the seabed.
MRC started as the brainchild of its founder Dr. Cdr. Arnab Das who is a celebrated researcher, maritime strategist, technocrat and entrepreneur. The MRC is home to a wide variety of folks. From Maritime strategists, Researchers and Environment scholars and Academia to corporates, Blue ocean strategists, Skill development professionals and technology innovators. MRC offers each of these stakeholders a common ground where knowledge and ideas translate into actionable insights. There are several forums within MRC that promote inter disciplinary exchange: regular webinars, researches, paper presentations, policy discussions as well as expert articles and underwater ecology and technologies… each of these are find place in the knowledge resources of MRC.
The topic of Underwater Domain is vast and MRC is cognizant that it needs the support and participation from many more stakeholders to create impact at scale. The Maritime Research Center welcomes the participation from individuals, groups and organizations in jointly creating a dialogue and awareness about the Underwater Domain, leading to improved synergies and harnessing the potential for human development.
